Our Story

Why I Built Spurr

Finding Christian community in a new city should not be this hard.

It started when I moved to Boston

When I moved to Boston in March 2026, I wanted to find Christian community. I knew there were young adult groups, Bible studies, worship nights, and campus ministries across the city. But finding them was much harder than I expected.

I spent a lot of time searching. Google, Instagram, church websites, event pages, newsletters, word of mouth. I still felt like I was only seeing a fraction of what was out there.

The problem was not that Christian community was missing. The problem was that the information was scattered.

Here is what I kept running into

  • Some groups had outdated websites. Some had no website at all.
  • Some were active mostly on Instagram.
  • Events were posted on Facebook, Eventbrite, Luma, Partiful, newsletters, or church bulletins, depending on the group.
  • Some communities were only known through word of mouth.
  • Even when I found something promising, I still had basic questions. Is this group active? Who is it for? Can newcomers just show up? What day do they meet? Who do I contact?
  • It was hard to know if a group was a good fit before committing to going.

As a software engineer who works with AI and data systems, I kept thinking that this should be easier. That is why I built Spurr.

What Spurr is trying to do

Spurr is a simple directory. It pulls together information about Christian young adult groups and events across Greater Boston, organizes it in one place, and makes it easier to find what fits your schedule, location, tradition, and life stage.

I use AI to help find and structure public information faster than manual research alone. But I care more about accuracy than speed. Every listing shows where the information came from, when it was last verified, and what still needs confirmation. Anyone can suggest a correction or add a group that is missing.

The first version is intentionally simple. It will get better as real people use it, correct it, and help it grow.

For young adults

  • Find groups and events
  • Filter by tradition, location, schedule
  • See verification status
  • Suggest corrections
  • Submit new groups

For ministries

  • Claim or update your listing
  • Submit events
  • Correct outdated info
  • Help newcomers know how to attend

How Spurr keeps information useful

AI-assisted research

I use AI to find and organize public information about groups and events faster than searching manually. It helps me cover more ground, but humans review what goes in.

Verification and corrections

Every listing shows its verification status and when it was last confirmed. Anyone can flag something outdated or wrong.

Community-maintained

The directory improves through real submissions, ministry claims, and feedback. The goal is for ministries to eventually own and update their own listings.

Spur one another on

“Let us consider how to spur one another on toward love and good works.”

— Hebrews 10:24

The name comes from this verse. The goal is not just to help people find an event. It is to make it a little easier for anyone — whether you are new to the city, exploring the Christian faith for the first time, or simply searching for a more welcoming community — to take that first step toward belonging, friendship, and worship.

A note on trust

Spurr does not publish star ratings for Christian communities. Instead, it focuses on simpler, more practical signals:

  • Where the information came from
  • When it was last verified
  • Clear labels when something still needs confirmation
  • A way for anyone to flag outdated or incorrect information
  • Ministry leader claims so groups can speak for themselves
  • Seasonal labels for campus ministries and academic-year groups

The goal is not a viral review site. The goal is accurate, honest information that helps someone decide whether to show up.

Built around trust

Spurr only works if people trust it. Some of the information people share here is personal. That includes what kind of Christian community they are looking for, where they live, and which groups they contact or attend. People should be able to share that information without worrying about how it will be used.

So here is the promise: Spurr does not sell personal user data. We use information to improve recommendations, keep listings accurate, and understand where Christian community is easier or harder to find in Greater Boston. If we ever share insights, they will be aggregated and non-identifying. Never tied to individual users.

Trust at Spurr is not only about whether the meeting time is correct. It is also about whether people can seek out community without feeling watched or exploited. That matters to us just as much as the accuracy of the listings.
